Adkins was the daughter of a single mother of just a few years, raised in various working-class London areas. She loved to sing contemporary pop songs when she was a kid and was proficient at playing the guitar and clarinet. But it wasn't until her teens, when she discovered rhythm-and-blues singer Etta James and other mid-20th century artists, that she began to consider a musical career. As she worked on her skills at a secondary school funded by the government for the performing arts a friend began posting songs Adkins wrote and recorded onto the social networking site Myspace. Following her graduation her music caught the attention of record labels. She signed a contract in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
